Hey guys, please introduce yourselves and what it is each of you are responsible for.
G’day guys we are Jake Hollywood, Kieran Mansion and Sean Mansion from Shock Mansion. As far as defined roles we don’t really have any. We all pitch in from the creative side all the way from the day to day business side of Shock Mansion. If one of us is busy doing something it’s great to be able to ask one of the boys to handle another situation with the knowledge that it will be taken care of as well as possible.
Lets hear a history on y’all coming to be.
We get asked this question a lot and we’re glad we are doing this one for an online site because it’s a long story. To cut it short we started a clothing label known as Crooked Uniform which later developed into Shock Mansion. But check out our history page for a full visual run down here.
I know your roots are from Australia. Do you guys work in the U.S. or is your base of operations in the motherland?
Our base is and always has been Down under. We all live and work out of a beautiful city known as Brisbane, Queensland where the sun shines daily and the women are beautiful.
Most people relate you guys to FM$ and various other brands, let’s hear a short history on how you guys linked with the various brands. What exactly do you guys do for the brands? Are you guys basically just the distribution for Australia?
Well basically we have structured our site and characters to allow us to collaborate with both corporate and ground level businesses driving traffic from a range of markets to our central hub Shock Mansion. We do this with specialized photography, digital media and product development, all while entertaining our audience with interviews and news from around the globe.
So with this direction we created we approached FM$ and in particular Matt Kipper and asked them to supply us product for shoots and our site banners. This then lead to further opportunities with famous all brought forward to us by Matt, he really is the glue that connects us with FM$ and we love him for it. As far as our other associations basically we used the same strategy and ended up working with some of the most amazing people from Osiris, Aerial7,Dragon, and more.
We like to ask all of our interviewees what sort of odd jobs they held before holding rank at Shock Mansion. Let’s hear what each of you guys did before hand.
Where do we start? Well each of us have worked in some crap jobs everything from kebab shops, digging ditches, roofing, mechanics, milk runs even the odd dodgy profession😉 The list goes on. But for all of us having worked in jobs that we really didn’t want to be part of gives us our drive in Shock Mansion and all of our endeavors.
A lot of the brands if not all are closely related to action sports and stuff like that. Do any of you guys participate in any action sports, if so, which?
We have all grown up together skating and riding dirt bikes, but ever since we moved our office towards the coast we tend to surf a lot more and still try to skate daily. Bikes where a big part of our crew when we where younger but injury and the focus on being successful business owners took over as far as passion goes.
-One of the many images featured on the walls of the FM$ booth @ Magic.
Me and my crew attended Magic and the FM$ booth was beautiful. For those who weren’t there, it featured some sick wallpaper featuring you guys wearing the latest goods from FM$. Did FM$ come to you guys and approach y’all about modeling and shooting their recent season drop?
Yeah that was amazing and we where so stoked to be apart of that with FM$ at Magic. They approached us with the idea to fill there huge booth walls with custom fantasy imagery using ourselves and their 2010 spring range. It was a big project for us as we hadn’t created such huge narrative billboards of that scale for anyone. But we think we pulled it off and from what we saw and the feed back we received it was pretty epic. It defiantly opened a few more doors and showcased us to an industry audience. Check it all out here!
How do you guys make those graphics look so rad?! Did you guys use Photoshop to make everything look so sweet?
It’s a combination of weed and coffee with a sprinkling of madness that gets the job done.
I really, really respect what you guys do. I know that you guys specialize in marketing which I think is very cool because I see a lot of similarities in both of our ventures and projects. My question is, did y’all attend college or at least receive a formal education in business and marketing?
Actually we haven’t formally studied, it’s been self taught all the way. We think from all the experiences we have encountered, good and bad, have not only taught us valuable lessons, but shaped our business decisions and given us the ability to make the right ones. We run by the 10,000 hour rule, and our 10,000 hours is upon us.
I know you guys are from Australia. Have you guys been affected by our economy?
For us personally no it hasn’t. We heard Richard Branson once say that economic down turn breeds a new generation of millionaires. We just keep going hard no matter what!
What’s a typical day and are there any upcoming projects that you guys have clearance to speak on?
Most days for us recently consist of long hours of work. Start the day with a double shot coffee and blog until our eyes bleed. The moment that is done we shift our attention to all our collaborations that are coming up. Shock Mansion x Osiris Shoes, Shock Mansion x Affends Clothing, a possible Shock Mansion x FM$ mash-up, and now there is talk about a Shock Mansion x Dragon Eyewear collaboration. Stay tuned for that! As far as collaborations go there are more in the works but for now this is what we can mention. I could sit here and tell you we smoke weed all day from hand rolled joints made by naked strippers but it’s just not the case. We love what we do, so we work around the clock.
It has become tradition for us to ask all of our interviewees if they have any parting words. Let’s hear it…
Shock Mansion making the impossible, possible. Fortune favors the brave.
Jake and crew, thanks so much for doing this interview with us. Best of luck! I can’t wait to see what is next and what the future brings for you guys!
No thank you for asking us to be apart of your rad site, we really appreciate it.
