The Cuban competitors will be wearing clothes shoe designer Christian Louboutin has created. The players will wear the clothes during the formal portions of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, like the closing ceremony and other non-competitive events. It’s a pretty significant flex for everyone involved: Louboutin doesn’t make clothing as part of his current collection, which is primarily focused on shoes. He created jackets, trousers, and shirts for both the men and women representing Cuba. Asked what he admired most about the athletes, Louboutin told WWD, “It’s that elegance and fluidity of movement of someone who is so in control of their body that fascinates me. At the Olympics, it feels like these athletes put on performance gear and simultaneously turn into these superheroes that defy gravity, that defy time, that defy all rules of physics. We designed the celebratory outfit for the moment they turn back into humans, still in that glory moment, still in their light but heading back to the real world.”
