INTERVIEW: JON CHASE OF DSTROYR

-Jon sent me this photo of him. I haven’t seen him in awhile, but I can only guess that this picture is new. I guess he is trying to do his best Slick impression, aviator glasses, beard and all.

Give us a history on Jon Chase. Where were you born? Heritage? Age?

I was born on the planet earth 36 years ago. I am a Hapa kid. My mom is Okinawan and Korean. My Dad is French and Irish. I am just a mutt!

What did you find yourself drawing as a kid and when did you first start?

I started to draw as soon as I could hold a pencil in my hand. I used to draw all of my favorite cartoon characters, and also guns. I guess somethings never change.

How did DSTROYR come to be? DSTROYR is such a rad name, where did the name come from? What’s the inspiration behind it all?

DSTROYR is a side project that started out as a blog for the art scene in Riverside. I would talk to other artists and no one had a clue about what was going on. So that’s how it started. It was a place for me to post up artshow information at the RAM, and what was going on in the IE. I still blog about what is going on out here, but I try to mix it up with other events and things I like.

The name came from a list, starting out with military names, weapon references, and Destroyer battle ships. I was listening to the KISS record at the time. DSTROYR is the idea that you do something for yourself and just enjoy it. Be the best for yourself.

Name a few brands you have worked with in the past. Any you hope to work with in the future?

In the past FMS,The Wild Ones, and more recently To Die For Clothing, Bulletproof Junkies, Lexus Japan, Scion, Ve’cel, Drift Alliance, La Rue Royale, Chocolate Crocodile, and BC13 just to name a few. I hope to work with… I would really like to mess with… Dang! There are so many! I don’t want to make a whole book out of this. So, if anyone is out there that wants to work together let me know.

A new comer walks in the DSTROYR HQ, What type of music is playing in the background? Also, you and I have a very similar taste in music, what’s on the playlist at the moment, and what CD or song was last blasting in the car?

Music right now that I am really into ’60s and ’70s music like The Zombies, Sergio Mendes, Herb Alpert, The Ventures, The Doors, KISS. I made an mp3 disc and left it in the dash of my car and it has all the KISS records on it. I’ve been listening to that for the past 2 months now. I think I’m gonna switch it up to Iron Maiden.

Any exciting new projects coming in the future you have clearance to tell us about?

I have finished up working on my own wine bottle. I am aiting to get the final word on that. I am working on the motorsports video with Teckademics, DSTROYR, Destroy Entertainment, INTRAX, and JL Audio. There are other projects are still in the works, and that is all I am able to say at this time.

What was it like to tattoo someone for the first time. What was the tattoo of? Who was the victim/client? Hahaha…

The first tattoo I did was on Slayer Sean. He is a Misfits fan, I’m a Misfits fan. So he got the skull on him. It was a special night for me, Maxx242 was helping me out, Katrina, Albert, and Chris Baker (‘Lil Chris) was there watching too. Actually a bunch of the homies were there. Tattooing is so very different then anything else, I wish I had more time to keep working on tattooing. It’s fun but also nerve racking at the sametime.

What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now. More specifically, where do you hope to be?

10 years from now, I guess just doing what makes me happy. Where? Good question! I have no idea.

Any new artshows coming up we should know about?

I just finished up a show at Exhibit A Gallery recently, that was super rad. Doing a show on July 11th called Chinatown Art Nights, and Sea No Evil 2009 in Los Angeles this August. Also, I will be doing another show at Exhibit A Gallery in October of 2009. It should be super, super rad!

Jon, big thanks for taking the time to do this interview with us. I understand how busy things are for you getting DSTROYR off of its feet, and tying the knot with Kat. Congratulations!
