INTERVIEW: BUFF MONSTER

Buff Monster himself doing what he does best.

For those who don’t know you, please tell us a little you about what you do.

I make paintings, I design toys, I paint toys, I put up posters sometimes, I work on projects with big companies, I do all sorts of art related stuff. It all started by putting up lots of posters in the streets.

-How it all started. Wheat pastes all over the place!

What types of things inspire you in your art and vinyl pieces?

Heavy metal music is always my biggest inspiration. I can’t get enough. Even all my fluffy happy pink stuff comes from a loud dark place. Other than that, I recently travelled to Europe and got really inspired by all the paintings, monuments and attractions that I saw. Classical (Renaissance) paintings are amazing.

-One of many amazing paintings by Buff.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. I moved to L.A. in 1997.

I can’t wait to see what your next solo show ‘Beyond the Pink’ has in store for us to see! Can you tell us a little more about the show?

Thanks! I’m looking forward to seeing it too. This is my fourth solo show with Corey Helford Gallery, and this time around I’m working much bigger than I have. I’m exploring some new stuff, again, inspired by classical paintings. And like I usually do, I’m revisiting some classic Buff Monster stuff; I’m painting on flattened spray cans, which I haven’t done in many years.

-Buff Monster has some of the finest toys to collect.

Are there any upcoming collaborations or solo projects that you would like to blast on here?

I’m working on my first toy with The Loyal Subjects. They’ve done some great big toys and we’re doing one based on my ‘Satanic Ripper’ painting. It’s called ‘The Destroyer’. It’s about 11 inches tall, has articulated arms and legs and some bad-ass antlers! I love it! Other than that, I just released my first plush figure, which I produced myself. There is a online exclusive colorway, and then lots of great stores have taken their own exclusives.

-‘The Destroyer’.

I heard that ‘The Monster Within’ show was a really good show. I bet it was an honor to see so many other artists renditions of your character.

That show as fun. I was really happy to have so many great artists come through with some amazing custom painted toys. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and it was the first show that I curated.

-Custom Vinyl toy by Buff Monster. Get yourself one of these little guys!

Where would one be able to purchase your art?

For paintings, contacting Corey Helford Gallery is always the best way to go. They have a few great pieces on hand. Other than that, I have prints, toys and stickers and all that on my website.

What type of software do you use for your visuals and vinyl designs? Photoshop?

I only use Photoshop for what it was designed for, which is to resize and touch up photos, and that’s about all I know how to do with it. Illustrator is my main weapon.

-An illustrated image by Buff.

Did you go to any schools for art?

I went to USC for art and business. Seemed like a good combo.

What would you suggest that any person should do if they’re trying to get a vinyl figure from paper to plastic?

Well, it’s just a matter of making a name for yourself. For any toy company to put up a whole lot of money to make toys, they gotta know they’ll make their money back and then some. Hard work and patience as usual. But other then that, I have a buddy who is working on making small runs of toys here in L.A. He’s got all the equipment, so if someone really wants something made, they should hit me up.

-Buff Monster plush figures, vinyl toys, stickers and much more are available on his online store. Go get it!

Buff, thank you so much for doing this interview for us, do you have any parting words you would like include?

Well, you should sign up for my newsletter at buffmonster.com. Other then that, I love xWhereEaglesDarex and thanks so much for including me on your site!
